Pediatric Pioneer Fellowship
WHAT:
The goal of the CORPH Pediatric Pioneer Fellowship is to provide a pediatric clinician the opportunity to develop a clinical outcomes research project under the guidance of an experienced mentor. The program will offer funds and/or protected time for a minimum of 6 and up to 18 months for the successful applicant. It is expected that 1-2 awards will be made annually.
WHO:
Investigators: This program is designed for pediatric MD or MD/PhD clinicians interested in exploring career development opportunities in the area of pediatric outcomes related research. Candidates for this program must be an active member of the medical staff at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Particular emphasis will be on providing assistance to clinicians who have little or no prior research experience. Pediatric medical fellows could be eligible under certain circumstances, including if in the final year of fellowship and have a commitment to remain at Children’s/Emory, but before applying must contact Kris Rogers, RN, Director of Clinical Research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at kristine.rogers@choa.org.
Mentor: Each project is required to have a mentor. The project described must have strong alignment with the mentor’s primary area of expertise as demonstrated in their biosketch.

BUDGET:
Awards are limited to $20,000. The suggested project period is 6-12 months, but up to 18 months may be requested for the conduct of the research associated with these awards. No cost extensions may be allowed with justification.
Allowable costs include:
- Investigator effort - May be budgeted only if division/department is not already supporting time for research activities (A minimum of 10% base salary plus fringe could be allowed in this category.)
- Supplies
- Support staff

HOW:

One PDF file should be submitted containing the following documents and information:
Applications must include:
1. Outcomes Research Project Title
2. Applicant’s NIH style Biosketch or CV
3. Mentor’s NIH style Biosketch or CV
4. Background information related to the context and importance of the research question (1 page max)
5. A clearly stated research question/hypothesis and research aims (1 page max)
6. Outline of the research plan (1 page max)
7. Expected results/findings and plan for formal dissemination of the research results via abstracts and publications in peer reviewed journals. (1/2 page max)
8. Clear statement of the role of the mentor during the project period; include resources that the mentor will dedicate and the frequency of meetings between the mentor and the applicant (1/2 page max)
9. Budget and budget justification to show intended use of the requested funds over the requested time period. Acceptable categories salary and fringe for the applicant (20% effort), necessary supplies, necessary support staff including biostats expertise and research coordinator effort and up to $1000 in travel (no space limitation on this section). All budget line items must be presented in a detailed fashion and must be well justified.
10. Signed letter of support from applicant’s division chief or medical director indicating support of the research project and assurance that the time required to accomplish the research plan will be protected over the proposed time period.
REVIEW CRITERIA:
- Relevance to child health
- Significance to the chosen field
- Scientific impact of potential findings
- Clearly stated aims and deliverables (e.g. publications, intramural and/or extramural grant applications)
- Likelihood that proposed work will lead to completion of successful project in proposed time period
- Likelihood that candidate will continue to participate and lead research projects
- Qualifications of the applicant
- Suitability and commitment by the mentor
