Research

Dr. Sands is a renal physiologist who uses a combination of isolated perfused tubule studies to measure urea transport, antibodies to measure changes in the amount, location, phosphorylation, or localization of the urea transport proteins, and surface biotinylation and confocal microscopy to measure changes in the subcellular localization of urea transporters. He has adapted methods to perform these measurements in both rats and mice, as well as in cultured cells. He is an internationally recognized authority on the urine concentrating mechanism, and in particular on the urea transport proteins. He has made key contributions to our understanding of the molecular physiology of urea transporters, their regulation through phosphorylation and trafficking, and their function.
