Research

The Kopp Lab utilizes human model systems to advance our understanding of how innate immunity contributes to the pathogenesis of chronic lung diseases. We focus on host-pathogen-environment interactions that impact children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and lung disease related to sickle cell. The two main areas of this research include how innate immune cells such as macrophages fail to regulate infection in chronic lung diseases as well as elucidating biomarkers/pathways of early inflammatory airway disease. Ultimately, the lab is in the process of developing novel therapeutics and targets to allow for improved killing of bacteria and regulation of hyper-inflammatory signaling in chronic respiratory diseases.  An emerging aspect of this research includes the impact of environmental toxicant exposure on airway infections and inflammation. My research advocacy and public health efforts center on increasing care for underserved populations and public policy to prevent climate change and environmental exposure impacts on respiratory health.

Through the Center for Cystic Fibrosis and Airways Disease Research (CF-AIR) we support multi-disciplinary research projects that bring together scientists, clinicians, and trainees to research emerging pulmonary and non-pulmonary manifestations of cystic fibrosis and other major pediatric lung diseases like asthma. I am particularly invested in developing and mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists.
