Chunhui Xu, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia and postdoctoral training from the Burnham Institute in San Diego, California. She has more than 16 years of research experience on stem cells and cardiogenesis. Before joining Emory University, she conducted research on the growth and differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells at Geron Corporation in Menlo Park, California. Her research has contributed to 1) the establishment of a feeder-free system for maintaining stem cells, 2) the identification of a role for basic fibroblast growth factor in supporting the self-renewal of undifferentiated stem cells, and 3) the development of a growth factor-guided method for efficient differentiation of stem cells into cardiomyocytes as well as their in vitro and in vivo characterization. She has published in journals including Nature Biotechnology, Circulation Research, and Stem Cells, contributed 6 book chapters, and is an inventor or co-inventor of 14 issued U.S. patents. Several of her publications have been identified as a hot paper or among the most highly cited publications in the stem cell field. At Emory, she directs the Cardiomyocyte Stem Cell Laboratory at the Center for Pediatric Nanomedicine, a center sponsored by Children’s Health Care of Atlanta, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Emory University. Her laboratory is focusing on human cardiomyocytes derived from pluripotent stem cells, which hold promise for cardiac cell therapy, disease modeling, drug discovery, and the study of developmental biology. Her laboratory is also collaborating with investigators in Georgia Tech, Emory University, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, exploring the application of nanotechnology and tissue engineering in stem cell research.
