Research:

My long-standing research interest is in the role of glutathione availability and chronic oxidative stress as a mediator of lung function and injury.

Primary research interest and efforts: My clinical and animal studies have focused on pulmonary pathologies associated with chronic oxidative stress and subsequent increased risk of lung injury in response to other insults. Recently, we have particularly focused on the role of glutathione depletion and chronic oxidative stress in alveolar macrophage dysfunction and risk of respiratory infections. My laboratory serves as the repository for the clinical samples from these alcohol-related studies and is skilled in the handling of clinical specimens, assessing oxidative stress in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and cells, exhaled breath condensate, tracheal aspirates, and plasma.
