Dr. Erica Ryherd is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior, she was a postdoctoral researcher in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy of Medicine in Gothenburg, Sweden. Dr. Ryherd's primary interests are in noise control, architectural acoustics, building systems engineering, and the response of building occupants to sound. This involves creating desirable sound environments through engineered control of unwanted noise sources and appropriate construction, materials, form, and systems design. Dr. Ryherd is currently pursuing a series of studies investigating the hospital soundscape. This work involves: a) improving acoustic measurement and characterization techniques, b) identifying and evaluating acoustic treatments and noise control strategies, and c) examining the effects of the soundscape on occupant psychological and physiological response. Dr. Ryherd has previous experience in both mechanical systems (HVAC) engineering and acoustical consulting that she integrates into her teaching and research. She is also active in the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) from whom she received the 2006 F.V. Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship. She is additionally involved in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) from whom she received a "Top 5 New Faces of Engineering" Award in 2008. Her other affiliations include the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)
